Description:

Via Principi d’Acaja is a historic street in Pinerolo, built between 1900 and 1910. The road crosses the ancient part of the city, with beautiful porticoes and fifteenth-sixteenth century houses: among these, the Senate palace, seat of the Court and then of the Sovereign Council of the King of France. At the far end of the road, in an elevated position, stands the late-Gothic church of S. Maurizio.

Near the small square of the ancient well located along via Principi d’Acaja a short staircase leads us to the Palace of the Princes of Acaja, built by Prince Philip at the beginning of the fourteenth century as a palace of representation and court of a small state, the first nucleus of the future kingdom of Savoy in Piedmont.

The building stood outside the oldest city walls, completed in 1358, and was not fortified. In a higher position there was a castle with defensive purposes.

The current building is only a part of the original construction and has undergone transformations over the centuries linked to its use (hospital, hospice for catechumens, residential areas). The façade with ogival arches of the windows decorated with terracotta tiles with floral/animal and anthropomorphic motifs, the battlements and the loggia of the internal courtyard are of notable artistic value. The hall of honor of the palace (used over time as an infirmary or dormitory) preserves some monochrome frescoes from the late fifteenth century.

History:

Via Principi d’Acaja is a medieval street, characterized by the presence of buildings and architecture from that historical period.

Throughout history, this street was an important commercial hub for the country and beyond.

Via Principi d’Acaja, unfortunately, was slightly penalized in its history by the presence of migrants, criminals and no good people, who obviously did not embellish the street, which however undoubtedly remains one of those with the most history in Pinerolo.

The Senate palace, built by Ludovico d’Acaja as the seat of the Curia Pinerolo Ensis (court) in the 15th century, has almost intact original structures. It hosts the permanent exhibition “the necropolis of Doma Rossa and the territory of Pinerolo in Roman times

Curiosity:

More recently, a mural representing the old French Pinerolo was created in Via Principi d’Acaja by Oscar Cauda and Pellizzari.

During the works for the construction of the Turin-Pinerolo motorway connection, the remains of a Roman necropolis were found in the Riva di Pinerolo area, near the “Doma Rossa” farmhouse, with around thirty burials which yielded around five hundred grave goods. Which were put in this exhibition.
