VIA VESCOVADO
On the corner of Via Vescovado there’s Palazzo Vescovile, an important structure of the historic section of Pinerolo. Inside Palazzo Vescovile, since 1997, there’s Diocesane’s Museum, an archive, with more than 250 years witnesses of diocese’s history.
In the beginning, the structure was the ruler’s residence during the French domination. In 1748, King Carlo Emanuele III gave the structure to the Pinerolo town Hall. Then it became a seminary, while Pinerolo became a diocese. Only after two years, bishop D’Orlìe made the structure his own property, that has been Savoia’s residence when they visited Pinerolo.
From Via Vescovado we can see the oldest part of the structure. The structure underwent a restoration at the beginning of 1900. The ground floor became a theatre, the first floor a chapel. In the second half of 1900, the palace was both a cinema and a gym. Since ‘97 the Palazzo Vescovile has been a Museum.
The architectural style is the same as the other historical structures: large walls, 2 or 3 floors with small windows, wooden truss and stone tiles. During the restoration, a worker found very old abbot’s medallions. The abbots were from Abbadia Alpina, now a part of Pinerolo, but in the past a different village.
